Improved police presence

20 March 2017

News of an increased police presence in the town centre and an officer “hub” is expected to be announced soon.

The BedfordBID Board includes a senior police officer who reports on activities and takes feedback from businesses. At the latest Board meeting on March 17th, the police representative said that community police supporter officers (PCSOs) are expected to be on duty during the day and that the night time team would be based in the BID zone at the hub.

Bedfordshire Police’s Special Constabulary Information evenings provide a chance for members of the public to hear more about volunteering with the Special Constabulary from serving Specials, as well as more about the application process.

The next event days will take place on May 8th 2017 and July 3rd 2017

The Special Constabulary is the UK’s volunteer police force. Specials work closely with full time Police Officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSO’s) both to patrol Bedfordshire’s rural and urban communities, and volunteer in specialist units like the Roads Policing.

After completing their initial training and once they have taken their oaths, Specials continue to be mentored and supported by experienced colleagues before they become independent.

Special Constables must be over 18 and able to commit a minimum of 16 hours a month to the role, although Bedfordshire’s Specials volunteer an average of 28 hours a month.
