Bedford's Flower Festival at Candlemas opens to a crowd of delighted visitors

02 February 2018

Bedford's Flower Festival at Candlemas (2-4 February) in St Paul's church, opened to a crowd of delighted visitors as Lord Lieutenant, Helen Nellis highlighted how these beautiful arrangements bring light into an often dull February. Candlemas celebrates the hope of spring and light after the darkness of winter (1).  The Dean of St Albans Abbey, the Very Reverend Dr Jeffrey John, blessed the Festival. Also in attendance at the opening ceremony were the MP for Bedford & Kempston, Mohammad Yasin and the High Sheriff for Bedfordshire, Vinod Tailor. Guests included representatives of all the flower arrangements.

Many themes under the overall title have been chosen for the 60 lovely and imaginative arrangements in this spectacular setting, from Windows for Candlemas, The Light of the world, Bringing hope to rebuild lives, Tranquillity and Simplicity to Floreat Bedfordia (May Bedford Flourish).

The flower arrangers come from groups and individuals across the county; flower guilds from numerous places of worship from St Albans Abbey and The Salvation Army to Peterborough Cathedral; representatives of various womens' and community groups, schools and floral businesses.

Don't miss this chance to enjoy these beautiful floral arrangements and to support the work of St Paul's church to further its vital spiritual and pastoral ministry in the community. The Festival concludes with a Candlemas Carol Service by candlelight, Sunday 4th February, 5.30 pm, sung by the choir of St Paul's, Bedford, one of the finest in the area, under the direction of Ian Runnells.
